CIA jets carrying terror suspects to secret locations for interrogation and incarceration touched down in Atlantic Canada at least 12 times since 2001, according to a newly released Amnesty International report.

The Amnesty investigation found CIA planes conducted about 1,000 so-called rendition flights between 2001 and 2005, with most of them landing in Europe.

A dozen of them were found to have touched down in Gander airport in Newfoundland.

Foreign Affairs Minister Peter MacKay said yesterday he will consider raising the issue of the American Central Intelligence Agency's use of Canadian airports with his U.S. counterpart, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

The former Liberal government dismissed Commons questions about the use of Gander airport by the CIA planes transporting suspected terrorists.

The Amnesty probe found that a 22-passenger Gulfstream III aircraft, the plane used to transport Maher Arrar from the U.S. to Jordan before he was taken overland to Syria, touched down in Gander 10 times from 2001 to 2005.

And a 19-passenger Gulfstream IV stopped in Gander twice in that same period.
