Ban supports death penalty campaign

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has shown support for a campaign to ban the death penalty worldwide.

Mr Ban was speaking in Brussels after meeting European Union officials and he was asked about an Italian proposal for a worldwide suspension of capital punishment.

He said: "Life is very precious and every human being has a right to live with dignity and life of human beings must be respected and protected."
