martin, proud and good-luck

No apologies, no regrets

Outgoing Prime Minister Paul Martin said he’s proud of his accomplishments in two years as prime minister.(JONATHAN HAYWARD / CP)

.... Martin said he hopes to do some international work, possibly for the United Nations, and to continue working to advance the quality of life for aboriginal Canadians.
Among his accomplishments as prime minister, Martin cited:
•The Kelowna accord, a $5-billion agreement with the premiers and aboriginal leaders on aboriginal health, housing and education.
•A $41-billion deal with the provinces to revitalize the health-care system.
•A $5-billion program to create a national daycare and early learning program.
•A multibillion-dollar transfer of cash to municipalities to help pay for roads, sewers and other projects.
But big chunks of Martin’s prime ministerial legacy will likely be quickly dismantled by Harper.
Martin’s legacy as finance minister, however, promises to be more enduring. Martin boasted that the country’s enviable economic strength and huge budget surpluses makes Canada unique in the world.
