Mayes takes aim at federal long gun registry
Salmon Arm Observer, Mar 17, 2006
By Colin Mayes MP
(Conservative)

Many constituents have expressed their concerns about the long gun registry. Our government is committed to scrapping the Long gun registry as soon as possible.

Citizens that have previously registered their long guns have now received a notice of renewal at a cost of $60 plus.

Most of us thought the cost to register our long guns was a one time cost and once registered only if the status of our gun inventory changed would there be any further need to renew or re-apply.

True to Liberal government form the gun registry has become a cash cow to keep people working in a government department that has little relation to serving the public interest.

Unfortunately, it will take longer to change the regulations than the renewal deadline faced by many long gun owners. I will continue to press for a quick resolve to the long gun registry so that law biding citizens don't feel compromised by the long gun registry regulations.

Canadians know that scrapping the long gun registry is not going to compromise the safety of citizens or those who are protecting us. With 1,059 unfilled RCMP positions across Canada, the dismantling of this registry would free up money for hiring more enforcement personnel thereby making our streets safer.
