Italians want troops out of Afghanistan
Jan. 25, 2007 / UPI / The Washington Times

A new survey says the majority of Italians support pulling their country's troops out of Afghanistan.

The poll, published on La Repubblica's Web site, said 56 percent want Italian forces withdrawn from the central Asian country, ANSA said.

Almost 2,000 Italian troops are serving in Afghanistan as part of the NATO-led peacekeeping effort.

Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi is under pressure from the Communist Refoundation Party, the Italian Communists' Party and the Greens to withdraw from Afghanistan, the Italian news service said.

After meeting with the three parties Sunday, Prodi said he was maintaining troop presence but promised not to send more soldiers.
