Palestine slams Quartet decision on keeping embargo
Gaza, Feb 3 (Xinhua) Hamas-led Palestinian government Saturday condemned the decision of the Middle East Quartet of the US, European Union, United Nations and Russia to continue financial embargo against it.
'The Quartet's resolutions only help the Israeli occupation and contradict with basic standards of democracy,' said Taher al-Nounou, spokesman for the Palestinian foreign affairs ministry.
'The resolutions also contribute to besieging the Palestinian people and imposing collective punishment on the people who believe in democracy,' he added.
After a meeting in Washington Friday, the Quartet renewed support for international sanctions against the Hamas-led government.
The sanctions were imposed after Hamas took office last March as the Islamic group refused to recognize Israel, renounce violence and honour signed peace deals.
