cnd brothels

No legal brothels for now
24 HOURS NEWS SERVICES

Canada's new justice minister doesn't support legalizing brothels or prostitution because he fears it would invite more organized crime into the sex trade.

An all-party committee of MPs studying Canada's prostitution laws spent months crisscrossing the country hearing from academics, social workers, police and prostitutes and was finalizing its report before the election call. A majority of them supported decriminalizing solicitation and bawdy house as ways to better protect sex trade workers.

But Justice Minister Vic Toews told 24 hours news services he isn't inclined to change the laws.

NDP MP Libby Davies, who has long advocated legalizing prostitution, said the Tory government must allow the committee to continue so the report's recommendations can be tabled and debated.
