some groups are actually so far out of left field ...
let's hope canada doesn't have a group like this ...
The Washington Defense of Marriage Alliance seeks to defend equal marriage
If passed by Washington voters, the Defense of Marriage Initiative would:
add the phrase, “who are capable of having children with one another” to the legal definition of marriage;
require that couples married in Washington file proof of procreation within three years of the date of marriage or have their marriage automatically annulled;
require that couples married out of state file proof of procreation within three years of the date of marriage or have their marriage classed as “unrecognized;”
establish a process for filing proof of procreation; and make it a criminal act for people in an unrecognized marriage to receive marriage benefits.

OK.....am I reading this correctly- now "traditional" marriage groups are targeting not only gay/lesbian couples but also heterosexual couples who choose not to have children.
You really, really have to wonder at the desperation of these people.
"some groups are actually so far out of left field ...

Are you being ironic here, Auda?
Because this is actually a very clever legal challenge to the assumptions behind restricting marriage to heterosexuals only.
If WDMA can't prove their case in the courts that marriage is primarily to provide the state with more citizens, then the state has no business restricting marriage to those ends.
Again, if I'm just being thick in missing your irony, mea culpa.
You wouldn't have a group like this in Canada because you have same-sex marriage. And years before that, you had financial and legal protections for same-sex couples via common-law arrangement acceptance.
The US has NO recognition on a federal level and scant few within only a handful of states.
While I'm not sure I agree with the idea of this, it is what happens when the "legal" system becomes a pawn of the right in parts of the country, spinning a web of absurdities in order to justify the indefensible failure to recognize legitimate, tax-paying couples in the benefits offered by marriage.
This group is attempting to highlight the absurdities of those rulings by pointing out that, by them, the courts have said that child-bearing can be the only legitimate rationale for recognizing a marriage.
Note I said not one (and a major one admittedly), but the ONLY legitimate basis for a marriage.
This is one way of saying, "Prove it! Let's make that the law of the land"
It reeks of desperation because that is what gay couples feel in the states.
You all should really be a INTENSELY concerned about the politicization of the courts in Canada, with Harper paving the way for getting the "right" judges in place.
This is what it leads to - you only have to look south.
alison ...
the way i posted it; was sort of on purpose; was to draw attention to it. to see if people actually read what is going on in this situation.
probably should have posted it differently ...
