Thumb Scans Speed Up School Lunch Line
February 2, 2007 / Associated Press
OMAHA, Ark. -- Some Arkansas school kids are giving the cafeteria lady the finger -- but it's not that finger.
The Omaha, Arkansas, School District has gone high-tech on the lunch line.
Students now pay by putting their thumb on a fingerprinter scanner.
The computer system keeps track of the students' cafeteria accounts.
Superintendent David Land said at first some parents were concerned about the need to fingerprint the children. But officials said the new system has helped to speed the lunch line.
Now, the kids want to go even higher-tech. Some are asking when the cafeterias will be getting retinal eye scanners, just like in the movies.
